Gelateria Bocelli: Terracotta Roof Tiles

Terracotta roof tiles are common throughout Italy, so I decided they would be perfect for finishing the roofs over the bay windows. First, I gave the roofs a base coat of terracotta color paint.

Fimo makes a terracotta color of polymer clay, which was perfect for making my own tiles. After a bit of experimenting, I settled on the right size and shape. Then it was just a matter of churning them out in quantity. I used a conical silicone sculpting tool as a mold and a toothbrush for texturing. Then I brushed on some soft pastels in shades of brown, red-orange, and beige to give them a weathered appearance.

Here’s my first batch after baking. I made some of the tiles shorter to fit the top row on the roofs.

The triangular corner sections were the trickiest. They required lots of awkward angular cuts.

After gluing all the tiles in place, I sealed them with a matte varnish. Unfortunately, some of the rough, weathered look was lost, but it was important for the pastels to not rub off.
