Throughout Italy, pirouline wafers are a popular garnish for gelato. In Italian, they are better known as cialde (wafers), or more specifically, rotoli di cialde.
I made these miniature cialde by twisting a rope made from two colors of polymer clay. The brown was a mix of Premo burnt umber and translucent, and the beige was a mix of Fimo Soft sahara, Premo ecru, and translucent. I used coarse sandpaper and a toothbrush for texture and light brown soft pastels for a baked effect. To create the illusion that the rolls are hollow, I gently poked a needle tool into the ends. After baking, I sealed the pastels with Helmar Crystal Kote Matte spray varnish.
I’ll be using some in another project shortly, but for now I’ve filled a jar with the wafers.
Here are a couple photos of them displayed on the shelf.
