Below the shelving in the real-life Cantine del Vino già Schiavi is a length of granite that matches their countertop. I considered doing something similar for my dollhouse shop, but the amount of work it took to make the faux granite for my countertop and window bench was ambitious enough. Given the struggles I’ve been dealing with in my personal life this year, I just wasn’t up for the challenge of making another veneer, this time large enough to yield sufficient tiles to encircle the entire room. So I took the easy way out and used Premo twinkle twinkle, which is essentially black polymer clay mixed with silver and gold glitter. The glitter is fine enough to not be overly sparkly, and the effect very much resembles black galaxy granite.
After cutting out the rectangles and baking, I sanded and buffed the tiles, then applied a coating of Renaissance Wax to bring out the shine.
Before installing the faux granite tiles, I added some wood paneling to the wall on the right side of the room. This was made from 1/2″-wide balsa wood, stained dark walnut.
Here are the tiles at the base of the wood paneling. (You can really tell how the time of day and amount of sunlight affected the color balance in these photos!)
Below the window, I also added some wainscot panels, similar to the ones on the counter, only smaller.
The baseboard tiles run along the base of the shelving all around the shop.
